5 years ago, these 7 guys gathered and formed a team called ‘Monsta X’. After surviving through an intense survival program, ‘No Mercy’, they debuted in 2015 with their debut song, ‘Trespass’. This is the ‘reality’. Through their solid world view from earlier on, they united as one and even though the time and appearance are different, the thing that bound them tightly is their consistent music. From that point, their global fans started to join them. This is an ‘incident’. This group started to travel all around the world from 2017 and it’s already 3 years they’ve been doing that. The top singers in the world are paying attention to them. They’re leading now, passing the K-Pop scene and begin to color several places on the earth with their music. That is a ‘history’.
They unite their action and it’s become reality, they gather their reality and it’s become an event. They collect the events and become history and legend, and myth. During those 5 years that isn’t short, Monsta X climbed with their own feet step by step and writing the history. This year too, they, who fly around the world again, are not able to know about the view that would spread in front of them. However, they haven’t decided which way they’re going to take, but the destination clearly similar to that youth image. Monsta X’s plan, as expected, is similar to Sports Khan, which has been running for 14 years. Let’s hear about them more through this interview. (continue from part one)
- What is the difference in the team when you just debuted and now? What is the part when you think improved the most?
Shownu: “Since debut, we wish people would think ‘Monsta X is cool. They’re a group who know how to have fun on stage’. That wish is still the same until now. In the beginning of our debut, there were some parts we regretted, but still, until now we think we show the performance that closes to our wish.”
Wonho: “The most improved part is participation members in album. I, Jooheon, and I.M participated with our composed song, even producing too. I like that because now we can release music that matches our team and suits every members’ music colour.”
Jooheon: “Our feeling about music is still the same, but I think our feelings for fans are growing a lot. When we debut, we only focused a lot on our music and stage. But after our debut, fans who support us are precious and we feel so grateful. So now, we changed our performance goal, that is to show music that our fans won’t feel ashamed of.”
- What is Monsta X’s world view?
Shownu: “The big meaning of our world view is ‘Monsta X is one’ in the end. Inside that world view, it’s divided into various worlds and makes the color or the image. Even in our album or music concept, we mix it with that concept then we show it in our music with a lot of charisma.”
Minhyuk: “We included our world view in our concert and music as well, it’s not only related to albums. I think people would understand it better in that form.”
I.M: “We give people the curiosity of the next story that is still related to our previous story in the album. The expectation for our next album won’t be easy. In that sense, I think the thing that pushes us for our next album is the curiosity people have about our next story.”
- Recently, you guys just collaborated with Steve Aoki and I.M released mixtape with E.L.H.A.E. Is there another artist you want to collab with?
Wonho: “First, I want to do unit stage in concert with Monsta X members. For overseas artists, I want to do a collab with Lauv. I like his emotions in his tracks. I think the good part of collaboration is we could make our color become deeper and clearer.”
I.M: “I want to work together with Ty Dolla Sign, DJ Mustard, and Travis Scott. Those three artists’ genre is diverse but like the genres, the result that comes out would be diverse as well.”
Jooheon: “I think collabing would help to give more color and a better spectrum in the future for our team. Artist I want to collab with is Lil Wayne, since he gave fresh air for hip hop.”
- You got great response from western countries, is there any plan for you to release an English album or some major debut currently?
Shownu: “There are several opportunities that opened for us. It’s not an album but because we released English songs, we became closer to fans recently. Like what we did with ‘Shoot Out’ and ‘Play It Cool’ also I.M’s solo mixtape, ‘Horizon’. If there’s a chance, we would like to do it more in the future.”
Jooheon: “I think it’d be good if I could release an English album through mixtape even if it’s not Monsta X’s album. As much as the mixtape got so much love, I want to release new music.”
- You’ve entered ‘World Digital Song Sales Chart’ and ‘Billboard Social 50 Chart’ in Billboard and was ranked no. 4, is there any target for you to enter main chart?
Minhyuk: “To enter the chart, first we have to make good music. So compared to targeting to enter the chart, I think it’s better to have greed to make good music so we would get a positive result in the end.”
Kihyun: “It’s dream for every singer all around the world, so we have that dream as well which would come true someday. But for now, that’s not what we think. Music that suits us the most, so if we make music that makes people listen and satisfied with us, someday a happy result will come to us, right.”
I.M: “I believe it will come true and I want to try for it. Like what we did together for our dream to debut, and things that came true until now, if we work hard like that, I think we could make it come true.”

- Before going for your third world tour, you guys just finished your concert and performance in Korea and Japan. What are you up to recently?
Shownu: “After finishing our performance in Japan, we’re preparing for world tour schedule while charging our energy. Because the tour is getting closer, we’re preparing a lot for it. Between the members, we’re having conversations about the music and stage. For the part we feel lacking at, we find what’s the flaw and cover it up.”
Kihyun: “We’re doing a lot of vocal practice. Since we’re going to visit several cities around the world, we have to use a lot of stamina in vocal or physical strength. So in order to show our best condition on stage, we are practicing constantly. We want to show a perfect performance to our fans.”
I.M: “I’m composing music and practicing for the tour. Since we’re going to go for world tour until August and in September we’re going to perform at ‘iHeartRadio Music Festival’ in Las Vegas, we’re preparing a lot for it.”
- Starting with Seoul concert last month, you’ve kicked off world tour. What are your thoughts about Seoul concert and this tour’s goal?
Wonho: “The most important thing that I think when doing the tour is having eye contact with fans and communicating with them. Since I think the reason why fans come to the concert venue is to communicate with us and enjoy the performance together, I’m working hard on that part. That’s what we did in Seoul concert, and I want to do that in other stops to with fans.”
Minhyuk: “Seoul concert is the first button and we greeted our local fans with ‘we’ll be back’. I want to say that it was a really great concert. Since Seoul concert ended, it seems like I could put down the burden about world tour for a bit.”
Hyungwon: “What I feel while performing are gratefulness and love. Looking at those who give us very big love and support made me feel so touched. That’s what I feel at this Seoul concert. Fans always say thank you for singing and love you but it should be us who tell them that.”
- Is there any difference from two world tour you’ve done before? And is there anything you want to try on this tour?
Shownu: “I think the difference is we’ve added Australia to the list so we’re able to see fans from new place. For the stage, the members’ unit stages are newer than the previous world tour. Self-composed song stage too, the performance too, are more upgraded.”
Hyungwon: “I want to sing together with fans. It might be hard to do it outside of Korea, but if overseas fans sing along to our song, I will feel so touched and remain in my memory. So this time I want to anticipate it.”
I.M: “If I have time, I want to sing the song from my recent mixtape shortly. Since it’s mixtape, usually it’s hard to perform it on stage but fans are waiting for it. If possible, even if it’s just one version, it’d be good if I could sing it shortly.”
- When you see your fans from all over the world in word tour, what kind of feeling do you have? Is there any country or city you want to go?
Wonho: “I want to go to Canada. We’ve gone to several places in America but it’s like we’re not meant to be with Canada. If there’s a chance, I want to go around several cities in Canada while meeting fans.”
Jooheon: “I want to go to Singapore. We’ve gone for fan meeting but since we haven’t gone there for the concert, it’d be good if we go there.”
Minhyuk: “I can feel the emotions that fill my heart well. We are not an artist who can meet our international fans every time we promote an album. We only meet them when we go overseas and we feel grateful because they support and cheer for us. That’s why we’re doing more overseas tour.”
- Monsta X is 5 years old now. How do you feel?
(t/n: they count it like debut year: 1st year, so this year is their 5th year)
Kihyun: “I can’t believe it’s already 5 years. Compared to looking back with regrets, seems like we’re the group who run towards improvement in front. Of course in the process, there are hard and difficult things but we could grow because of it.”
Shownu: “I feel like 5 years is shorter than what I expected. We’re not a team that gets impressive spotlight since debut, but we’re growing step by step and until we get where we are now, I feel like time moved fast. There are many hard and happy things but all of them aren’t memories that could be changed.”
Hyungwon: “We’re still lacking a lot and there are still many ways for us to go but I think we’ve run hard to the front and show many good sides of us. As the result, we got ‘Growth-dol’ attached to our name and I feel proud. Our fans are proud of us too so we feel very happy as well. We want to be a team that goes around the world like this.”
